Feedback

Charlie your response is proficeintand you have been creative with your blogs, I particularly like the use of lauout and design of your blog.  Do try and be as academic in your entries as possible - use lots of examples and apply key concepts. Your clearly identify your target audience and have profiled them well.  Good research into CD covers and you have a wide range of examples, and this would be developed further if you can link the real product to how it will influence your own designs.

Design Of Digipak (RENEY)

Similar Artists Album Artwork

PEGGY LEE:

Peggy Lee performed the original 'Why Don't You Do Right' in the late 20's early 30's.

The artwork is focused on Peggy Lee and her image. It doesnt just capture her face but also captures her chest. This could suggest that it is also trying to reach out to a male audience. The artwork is classy which portrays her personality (Diva). The font is also classy, which portrays the classy and 'sophisticated' classic and original music.

MICHAEL BUBLE:

Michael Buble appears to a young and old audience as his music replicates old fashioned music, which is in fashion.

The artwork is similar to Peggy Lee's and Focuses on Michael Buble as they need to portray his image. The font is also classy, which portrays his classy brass and orchestral driven music. From the artwork we can tell the album isnt going to be pop as it looks serious and the colours are dark and faded and mainly because Michael Buble is sporting a Suit.

Institutional Context Of our Artist (RENEY)

Reney would be signed to a minor record label as Techno Swing has a niche audience.

'Why Don't You Do Right' is in the similar to the style to the famous recently released hit track 'We No Speak Americano'. This was released in 2010 and used samples of an original italian song. It was released under the independent label Sweat It Out. I think our artist Reney would work well with a respected independent label with a few smash hits uinder its belt.

The song 'We No Speak Americano' is similar style to 'Why Don't You Do Right'

The indipendent record label Sweat It Out is a good choice because of its previous succesful releases it has the attention of larger labels in the industry and also radio labels and TV stations.

Another label which I thought would be suitable for our artist is Hoxton Whores. They are an independent Proggressive Rock label in London. They also specialise in Mixes which would be suitable as our artist Reney's music are mainly remixed old songs.

                  RENEY'S TARGET AUDIENCE

Our arget audience = younger generations (16-30).
We choose this audience as the music appeals to a younger audience as it is up tempo and electronic. Also the image portrayed will appeal to the male audience aswell as the female audience.
Through our Music Video ideas we are hoping to portray a classy image of Reney so it could also appeal to the middle and upper class. I would say our main targer audience is mainly girls 16-30 and middle class.

The music could also appeal to nightclubs, which would widen the audience.
The older generations 30 +, might not be to keen with Reney as they are remixes of original old fashioned classic hits, and that they have been changed. This might be a negative for some.

Researching Ideas For "Why Don't You Do It Right"

When we were thinking of the performance aspect. We thought it would be good to have male dancers. So I decided to go and research and remembered that I had recently seen the "This Is It" film by Michael Jackson and the intro to Smooth Criminal was something similar to what we wanted to create.
I like the period costumes used in the video and they also used silhouettes in another similar video.

We as a group are really keen on shooting something something similar to this images as they are really dramatic.

Music Video Treatment

After discussing and collecting all of our ideas, we all seemed to be most keen on the 1920's Theme.
We weren't to impressed with the song which we were close to choosing which was "Singing In The Rain" by Mint Royale. While browsing for other 1920 songs we came across "Why Don't You Do Right" by Peggy Lee, which was a 2010 remix which fitted perfectly with our idea of the 1920's.
The beginning of "Why Don't You Do Right" is slow and in the 1920's style and then the tempo is increased and there is an obvious change from old fashioned to modern. At the beginning during the old fashioned section, we thought of having two black men shining white mens shoes (typical 1920's), and then when the modern section is introduced they will both mix to show the racial contrast between the 1920's and the current day.
We were thinking of shooting the Music Video in Black and White and then have a few shoots of the lead vocalists in B&W with red lipstick.
We also want to include a Narrative element into the video, but we are still discussing on were to take it.

Initial Ideas for MUSIC VIDEO

We have just been allocated to our groups, I am in a group which has four of us in. All of us have similar ideas about what we should do for the videos.

THESE ARE A FEW INITIAL IDEAS

1.) An old fashioned music video (1920's) juxtaposed against a modern remix of a period song. We felt this would be original and that it has potential. We also thought it would be nice to bring in a dance element to the music video and were thinking of having the dancers wearing traditional suits and bowler hats, similar to the photo below (Charlie Chaplin).
When thinking about this idea, we came up with a song by "Mint Royale" which is a remix of the classic "Singing In The Rain".
This song was first shown for a Volkswagen Car Advert, and then was made famous by a "Britain's Got Talent" contestant. After listening to it and observing it, we all decided as we needed to be promoting an artist and creating a star image, this song would not be ideal as there are no vocals. So we are still searching for another modern version of an old fashioned song which we would then be able to take the idea further, and into pre-production.

2.) Our other idea involved a darker and more edgy side to it. When researching Music Videos, I came across an up-and coming artist called Skylar Grey. She has just recently released 2 solo debut singles. They are two very contrasting songs and videos.
I really like the way this video has been edited. It is a fast paced video with lots of quick cuts and disturbing images, for example when Skylar Grey comes out of her previous body. I am really inspired by this video and think it would be a big challenge to make a dark and edgy music video similar to this.
The video below also by Skylar Grey is another video which I feel relates to a wide audience.

THE BRIEF : Introduction to Advanced Portfolio

The Brief

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

a website homepage for the band;

a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);

a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

All material for all tasks to be produced by the candidates with the exception of acknowledged non-original sound or image material used in a limited way in video/radio work. Further guidance will be available in the support materials. For music video, permission should be sought from the artist for use of the audio track.

The centre will be expected to allocate marks according to four levels for each of three categories:
Research and Planning

Construction

Evaluation

In arriving at a level for each category, teachers are advised to look for evidence of ‘best fit’. It is possible both for a candidate to be placed in different levels for each of the three categories and to receive quite different marks from other members of the same group responsible for producing an artefact, according to his/her contribution. Teachers are asked to support marks with written comments under the three categories on the assessment sheet.

Acres Of Life Pre-lim "Doctors Vs Cupid"

Acres Of Life (Planning)

Acres Of Life are a energetic youthful Pop-Punk Band, based in the U.K. There music is hard-hitting and energetic which made us start to plan that we had to make a fast paste fnal cut of thier music so that the overall project would work.
As there image was leaning towards indie we planned on using a messy/clustered set which would go nicely with there dress style. Also to fit into their youthful style we decided that we would have a load of flashing lights which portray their energy while they would "jumping" around on the set of the music video.
While there iamge is youthful and energetic it is also slightly dark, so we also decided to portray this  by using dim lighting with a few flashes, and also this was carried through in their choice of dress for the day.

This is a video of "Acres Of Life" in the studio recording there debut EP which included the song we were shooting called Doctors Vs Cupid.
To make the video as energetic and exiting as the music we planned to have plenty of shots which would be showing them jumping up and down while singing or playing their given instrument.

On the editing side we all wanted it to be a quick cut which would go hand i hand with our given song.
While researching for ideas for the music video I stumbled among this group called "All American Secrets".

There song dirty little secrets, reminded me of slightly of Doctor Vs Cupid. And gave me ideas of how to shoot and edit this music video for Acres of Life. I admire the dim white lights used throughout the video, and the shoots used during the performance aspect of the video. Unfortunatly as we dont have a short ammount of time to create a short section of a music video we only get to concentrate on the performance aspect and not the narrative part, which I admired in this song.

Star Image (Prelim Task)

The star image of the band we did a music video for were a young and modern looking group, with long hair and modern clothes, similar to this band below.
